Hey Connie here! I'm an engineer turned educator turned entrepreneur, and next year, I will be pursuing an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business! I've picked up a few tools along the way, but I seem to have misplaced them... Can you help me find them?

By golly, that's where it is: you’ve found my WRENCH! This was my tool of choice back when I studied mechanical engineering at MIT. My wrench helped me to build all of my greatest ideas. As an engineer, I built assistive technologies like FingerReader, a camera mounted on a ring to help blind people read on-the-go. Engineering sparked my passion for education because I experienced the incredible empowerment that comes from solving problems with real world impact instead of just problems in textbooks. I pivoted to becoming a high school teacher shortly after I graduated, but now I seem to have lost my tools from that time period! Now where are they...

You’ve done it! You’re found my APPLE! This was a prized gift from one of my students. I started out as a design and engineering teacher at a high school near San Francisco called the Nueva School. There, I taught classes like Making Smart Wearables, Building Balancing Robots, and Designing & Engineering for Social Good. After two years as a teacher, one thing was clear: students needed more time in the school day to be solving problems that they were passionate about and that pushed them to brainstorm creative ideas. I was passionate about bringing that sort of project-based learning experience to all students, so I left my teaching job to start an education nonprofit to democratize innovative learning.

You’ve found my LIGHTBULB! Coming up with Project Invent certainly was a lightbulb moment. I realized that by training teachers in design thinking and pairing students with real problems in their community, we could make learning experiences that were exponentially better than what was currently happening in schools. And we could do that at scale. In less than two years, I’ve started Project Invent teams in 30 schools across 14 states, and we’re doubling to 60 schools next year! We’re growing fast and recently raised $400,000 to continue making real, scaleable change.

Finally…my MORTARBOARD! I haven’t quite unlocked this one yet, but it won’t be long. In 2020, I will be pursuing an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and that means it will be no time until I will be throwing this hat into the air to celebrate my graduate degree. And after that…there are so many possibilities! What I do know is that Stanford will give me a whole new set of tools for my toolbox. I will explore ways to make impact in education through business, policy, technology, and more. The future is an open door! Now let’s get you to that final flag!

Thanks for playing my game to learn a little more about my journey. As an avid creative and an occasional programmer, I'm glad you were able to explore my story through the world of Javascript and video games. Changing education is my life's work, but it was a winding road to get there. Now, I am excited to pursue an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business to learn even more about making impact in education at scale. If you'd like to learn more about me, please visit conniekliu.com. That's all for now!
